Coastal environments accelerate metal corrosion at 5-10 times the rate of inland locations. Salt-laden air penetrates standard protective coatings and initiates pitting corrosion that compromises hardware function.
Material Selection Guide
| Material | Salt Spray Rating | Coastal Application |
| Stainless 316 | 500h+ | Exposed outdoor, marine |
| Stainless 304 | 240h+ | Indoor coastal, kitchens |
| Aluminum 6061 | 200h+ | Indoor, lightweight |
| Steel + Dacromet | 240-500h | Hidden hardware |
| Steel + standard zinc | 24-48h | ❌ Not suitable |
Coating Systems
Dacromet
The preferred coating for coastal hardware applications. Zinc-aluminum flake system provides 240-500 hours salt spray resistance without adding significant dimensional change.
Heavy Powder Coating
Thick film (60-80μm) provides 96-240 hours protection. Suitable for visible hardware in indoor coastal applications.
Stainless Steel (No Coating)
Best long-term solution. Type 316 stainless eliminates coating failure risk entirely but costs 3-4x more than coated steel.
